Vox was a commission from my partner Kay (@demonfoxcosplay). I, of course, care a great deal about Hazbin Hotel, and Kay and I met while both cosplaying Alastor, so this was sort of a full-circle moment for us. Alastor/Vox (namely Stayed Gone) is most of the reason I went back to Hazbin Hotel after bouncing off the first episode. Season 2 spent a lot of time on Alastor and Vox's relationship, so our mutual enthusiasm was rejuvenated.

Process

Who's the bestest demon shark in the world?

Season 2 gave Vox a few new outfit alternatives, and we wanted to do something new/S2-specific for sure. We were undecided until we found a printed shark vinyl fabric in the correct tone of gray for the lapels of Vox's finale outfit. We paired with a slightly glossy waxed canvas black for the main body of the jacket, and I got to work on patterning while we looked for the rest of the materials and while Kay made plans for the props and accessories.

Perfection is our brand

I did some sketching and worked out the details of how I wanted the basic construction to look -- where to put general shaping seams, how the tails should split and how to work in the decorative bits, how the cuffs should look, etc. Then I cut a paper pattern via a combination of tracing from existing garments and block patterning. I traced the collar from a 1980s Burberry rain coat that I inherited from my grandmother, so Vox has some extra chic DNA. It took a couple of rounds to get the pattern to sit together properly, then I moved on to making a cotton mockup.
